The Be Resilient Tee in Black & White options on a premium fitted t-shirt.
The “Be Resilient” shirt design is something I wanted for myself but it didn’t exist. I wanted a shirt with meaningful messaging that was just for me. Something that I would benefit from even if I was wearing a sweatshirt and nobody saw it. Less about the design or cool factor and more about quiet personal growth.
Resilience as a character trait is universally valued but in my experience rarely discussed. The ability to get back up when you fall is extremely important in business, relationships, faith, and racing; essentially all aspects of life. True resilience is about more than just getting back up. True resilience learns from mistakes and uses them as opportunities to get better.
Motocross, like all of life, is full of challenges. I have lost track of the amount of bones I’ve broken, or even which ones. I’ve wanted to give up. I’ve doubted if I had what it takes. I spent nights awake after surgery riddled with anxiety, questioning if all the effort to get back up would be worth it. But I didn’t quit. I rebuilt myself from the ground up and eventually found success again. It took everything I had at times. But the confidence I have today—knowing I was able to “Be Resilient”—will stay with me for the rest of my life.
All that being said, resilience isn’t just for the big things in life. When small things like unmet expectations, or a big pile of laundry, bad weather, or someone cutting you off in traffic threaten to bring our mood down or “ruin” the day we have a choice. We can let it drag us down or we can “Be Resilient”. Sometimes the small things are more difficult to bounce back from. So wether it’s not letting spilling hot coffee all over ruin your mood or a major life situation, the mantra “Be Resilient” is helpful. That’s why I made the shirt.
Quick story, this year in State Farm Stadium in Arizona I was running a great race. Good start, solid pace, very few mistakes. It was looking like a podium night. With five laps remaining I changed up a few lines that didn’t work and I got passed by two riders. I missed out on the podium by 1.9 seconds. The exact amount of time I lost in sector five since I had changed my line. Big bummer. Major disappointment. What the heck happened. I can still feel the frustration in my stomach as I write this weeks later. This same night was the first time I had a chance to try some MOSI prototype shirts. I chose to wear the “Be Resilient” design to dinner and it changed my whole demeanor. Instead of being Eeyore from Winnie-the-Pooh all night I was reminded to “Be Resilient” and picked my head up. On an evening which could’ve easily had me spiraling, I was able to get back up, dust myself off and move forward because I made a choice to when I put on the shirt. I knew I was going to learn from my mistakes, make the necessary adjustments, and improve. That’s what resilience does and I know when you wear this shirt it will remind you to do the same.
